WARNING! Your Flash Player may be out of date.

Adobe Flash Malware driven by infected "Router" The Moon Malware

Few days ago, I started to receive a pop-message "WARNING! Your Flash Player may be out of date". Please update to Continue., when I was trying to access websites like Facebook, YouTube, Google, etc.

If you're receiving a similar message then continue to read but make sure you don't click on anything nor try to update the flash player from the pop-window. You may check your current version of the "Adobe Flash Player" by visiting "Adobe" official website. If you're using Google Chrome browser, it already includes Adobe Flash Player built-in. Google Chrome will automatically update when new versions of Flash Player are available.

You will also notice that the same message is poping-up on all the devices which are connected to the same router (mobile phones, laptops etc.).



Now even the dumbest person should know it is not coming from computer but from the network which means your router is infected. It's commonly happening with Linksys, Asus and few other manufacturers.

How to fix this?

  • Reset your router (by holding down the reset button under the router for 6 seconds). Note after restart all your ISP settings will be lost.
  • Configure your router again with the ISP settings (username and password also required).
  • Clear your browsers cache and pop-up message will not appear again.

Every business needs to address the ever-changing cyber threats that now make their way the Internet. It is not enough to merely install anti-virus software and believe that this will solve all of a business’ problems. Here are three of the biggest threats to company’s cyber security that you should know.

Phishing

Phishing is a practice in which hackers gain access to private consumer data. Frequently, a hacker creates an email to look like it was issued by your company. A customer may then respond to the email and provide his or her personal information. The hacker then preys upon this disclosure and uses it to open credit cards, make unauthorized charges and take advantage of the consumer’s identity. The essence of a phishing crime is that the hacker gains the trust of the customer. They may use sophisticated tactics to learn information about your customers, such as the names of relatives. The hacker then may pretend to be one’s distant relative to ask for financial assistance from the consumer.

Businesses have a duty to protect their customers from phishing attacks. Businesses should realize that information even like consumer names can be private information. If a hacker gains access to consumer names, then he or she may use social networks like Facebook to learn more information about the customer. Businesses need to be aware of these practices and work with cyber security firms to prevent information disclosures.

Malicious Political Attacks

Businesses should also be aware that not every hacker is motivated by profits. Some hackers are residents of foreign nations and discontented with the notion of capitalism in general. These hackers are very sophisticated and using numerous methods to target specific businesses. One example of a recent attack included an attack on a satirical news company by the Syrian Electronic Army. The Syrian Electronic Army was able to hack into the servers for the news company and then make its own postings on the site. One mistake that businesses make is underestimating the abilities and sophistication of enemy nations or politically-motivated hackers.

The best way for businesses to handle attacks from politically-motivated data hackers is to be proactive in preventing attacks. Businesses should not use a reactive method of dealing with politically-motivated data hackers. A reactive method does not solve the actual issues that lead to the hacking of business accounts. A reactive method also does not provide security to a business, because a business may still be attacked by army hackers in the future.

Monetary Fraud Hackers

Unlike the Syrian Electronic Army, some hackers are only motivated by financial gain. These hackers only seek to gain access to checking accounts, savings accounts, trust funds, Social Security information and credit card information. These hackers attempt to gain access to the internal data systems of highly-profitable companies. They are very sophisticated in the tactics that they use to hack corporate accounts.

Businesses need to take preventative measures in protecting internal corporate data systems. Many businesses are realizing this and are now working with sophisticated firms to protect their internal data systems. A company can also be very selective in the access that it provides to internal information systems. If many employees have access to internal data systems, then a company may be jeopardizing the information of its customers.

More than ever, companies need to be proactive in addressing cyber security threats. Cyber threats can cause serious legal issues for companies in the event of a hack or leak. Taking time to improve a company’s data system security is an investment in the future of the company. Cyber threats are only likely to increase in the future years, and businesses must be ready to prevent these attacks.

The holidays are a busy time for everyone… especially for hackers trying to phish your employees. Phishing is most effective when it exploits human emotions—fear, greed, anxiousness, curiosity, compassion, getting a good deal—and the holidays tend to bring these emotions out more than other times of the year. This gives adversaries a bevy of relevant topics to use to build phishing campaigns. However, which tactics should you train your employees look out for?

Below, PhishMe has pulled together a list of the most common holiday-themed phishing attacks:

Holiday e-card: Who doesn’t love to receive a nice holiday greeting? But is that link to an e-card actually from your co-worker, manager, HR department, etc. or is it something sinister? Emails that appear to be holiday e-cards are a simple and effective phishing tactic every holiday season.

Holiday party info/registration: The company holiday party is always a much anticipated event, and The Wall Street Journal estimates 9 out of 10 companies will throw some kind of holiday party this year. That means lots of organizations will send out email invitations, so spoofed invitations present another great holiday-themed opportunity for attackers crafting phishing emails.

Travel notifications: AAA estimated that 93.3 million people traveled more than 50 miles from home during the end of December last year, and that means airlines will be sending out plenty of flight change/confirmation emails. We have seen some pretty realistic phishing emails that spoof the types of emails airlines commonly send to passengers, and an email warning of major itinerary changes will certainly grab the attention of an employee eager to get home for the holidays.

Information Security Forum (ISF) Identifies 6 Major Threats for 2014

ISF report states top six security threats global business will face in 2014 include the cloud, "BYO" trends and cyber-crime

A nonprofit group founded in 1989, the ISF performs research on topics dictated by its 350-plus global member organizations. Only recently has it begun making its findings public.

The six threats identified as major concerns headed into 2014, ISF emphasized the need for companies to find trusted partners and talk about cyber-security—a topic that's often treated as private.

Six: BYO

Trends Topping the ISF's list is BYO, and it's no mistake that the "D" is missing. Workers bring their email accounts, their cloud storage and more. As the trend of employees bringing mobile devices in the workplace grows, businesses of all sizes continue to see information security risks being exploited. These risks stem from both internal and external threats, including mismanagement of the device itself, external manipulation of software vulnerabilities and the deployment of poorly tested, unreliable business applications.

Five: Data Privacy In the Cloud

The cloud presented no danger, as long as one could tick off a list of items, including knowing how many clouds a company has; what other companies' data are being stored on the same servers; whether one's storage services are being subcontracted; and if there's a clear plan for what happens when a contract with a cloud provider is terminated. While the cost and efficiency benefits of cloud computing services are clear, organizations cannot afford to delay getting to grips with their information security implications.

Organizations must know whether the information they are holding about an individual is Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and therefore needs adequate protection.

Four: Reputational Damage

There are two types of companies—those that have been hacked and those that are going to be. What would a hack mean to your marketing manager, to your head of investor services, to your PR team that needs to put out that statement?. When the situation is something that could send stock prices plummeting, the reality of it sets in.

Three: Privacy and Regulation

Organizations need to treat privacy as both a compliance and a business risk, according to the ISF. "Furthermore," the report added, "we are seeing increasing plans for regulation around the collection, storage and use of information along with severe penalties for loss of data and breach notification, particularly across the European Union. Expect this to continue and develop further, imposing an overhead [cost] in regulatory management above and beyond the security function and necessarily including legal, HR and board level input."

Two: Cyber-Crime

ISF emphasized how shockingly excellent criminals are at coordinating and working together toward a cause. The Syrian Electronic Army's hack into The New York Times was offered as an example. The bad guys are really great at collaboration, because there's a lot in it for them.

Cyber-crime, hacktivism—hacking for a cause—and the rising costs of compliance, to deal with the uptick in regulatory compliance issues, can create a perfect storm of sorts,. "Organizations that identify what the business relies on most will be well-placed to quantify the business case to invest in resilience, therefore minimizing the impact of the unforeseen.

One: The Internet of Things 

High-speed networks and the Internet of Things will create scenarios like the ability for a car to detect a traffic jam ahead and understand that its driver won't make it to the airport in time for his flight—and so contact the airport to change the flight. That level of information, in the wrong hands, is concerning.

Businesses can't avoid every serious incident, and few have a "mature, structured approach for analyzing what went wrong.

By adopting a realistic, broad-based, collaborative approach to cyber-security and resilience, government departments, regulators, senior business managers and information security professionals will be better able to understand the true nature of cyber-threats and respond quickly and appropriately."

Basic Tips To Protect Mobile Device

Mobile owners should pay attention to mobile device safety!

Mobile communication has never been this cool, from the traditional SMS and call features, we can now enjoy desktop experience via smartphones and tablets. However, aside from the health risks associated with excessive use of cell phones, the advent of mobile internet has raised the risks too.

It is common that most of us protect the hardware and exterior of our phones, but do not exert enough effort to protect the OS and contents of our phone from hackers, and strangers who can get hold of our misplaced or stolen smartphones.

Allow me to share with you some tips I thought will give basic protection so private photos or videos, debit/credit card credentials, and other private information will not be at the mercy of other people.

  • Use password to open your phone, make a purchase and open a file (if available). The inconvenience it’ll bring is nothing compared to the risk involved.
  • If available, activate the “find my phone feature” of your phone.
  • If available, activate the feature that can remotely erase contents, or reset of your phone.
  • If available, activate a “kids safety feature” of your phone- this will prevent your kids from accessing apps that are not kid appropriate, or accidentally altering the configuration of your phone or erase some data.
  • If available, use an anti-virus solution for your phone
  • Take precaution when connecting to public hotspots.
  • Do not click links attached to an email, direct messages, or status updates in your timeline. Verify first w/ the sender. These links normally downloads a malware or give permission to hackers.

Beta Bot: A New Trend in Cyber-Attacks

Beta Bot Malware Blocks Users Anti-Virus Programs

A new warning about malware designed to target payment platforms highlights why anti-virus software is increasingly ineffective at preventing account compromises. And while this new Trojan is not yet targeting online-banking accounts, financial institutions should be aware of the threat. The malware is another example of how fraudsters are increasingly getting around standard modes of authentication, such as usernames and passwords.

The Internet Crime Complaint Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation recently issued an advisory about Beta Bot, the new malware that targets e-commerce sites, online payment platforms and even social networking sites to compromise log-in credentials and financial information.

When Beta Bot infects a system, an illegitimate but official-looking Microsoft Windows message box named "User Account Control" pops up, asking the user to approve modifications to the computer's settings. "If the user complies with the request, the hackers are able to exfiltrate data from the computer," the advisory states. "Beta Bot is also spread via USB thumb drives or online via Skype, where it redirects the user to compromised websites."

Beta Bot defeats malware detection programs because it blocks access to security websites and disables anti-virus programs, according to IC3. "This is a good demonstration of how fraudsters' methods are evolving constantly. They are coming up with sophisticated methods that appear so convincing, even people who typically would not fall for their schemes may do so.


Beta Bot's attacks also resemble the ransomware attacks that coupled the banking Trojan known as Citadel with the drive-by virus known as Reveton, which seized consumers' computers and demanded ransom, purporting to be from the FBI.

IC3 and the FBI warn that if consumers see what appears to be an alert from Microsoft but have not requested computer setting modifications from the company, they have likely been targeted for a Beta Bot attack. If infected, running a full system scan with up-to-date anti-virus software is recommended. And if access to security sites has been blocked, then downloading anti-virus updates or a new anti-virus program is advised.

Scam Of The Week: Ransomware Uses Child Porn Threat

Cybercriminals have cooked up a new way to blackmail people!

Getting caught viewing child porn is a huge deal and instantly makes you an outcast in most western countries. Cybercriminals have cooked up a new way to blackmail people out of their money, both inside and outside the office.

The ransomware family is called Revoyem (aka Dirty Decrypt) and uses the worst possible strategy to get people to pay up. It starts at a porn site that you have landed on, either on purpose or by accident. Then you are redirected by a malicious ad to an actual child porn themed page with very disturbing images. But while you are there, your PC gets infected with the Styx malware dropper which downloads ransomware and your computer gets locked.

The lock screen again shows disturbing images and now accuses you of watching child porn and what the penalties are. However, here comes your friendly ransomware to the rescue. Just pay the fine and you will not be prosecuted. They tell you to use either MoneyPak or PaysafeCard.

The attack is seen in the U.S., Canada and several Western European countries, is translated for each territory and uses the correct government law enforcement agency as a threat. This looks very much like an Eastern European Cybermafia operation.

WHAT TO DO: In an office environment, call the helpdesk and they will treat this as malware and remove it. At the house, call the police and file a complaint. It is likely the Police already know about it. 

Also take the PC to an expert and get the malware removed. And stay away from unsafe areas on the Internet like gambling and porn sites! Here is how the lock screen looks:

Beware - Trojans on Google Play Infected Up to 25,000 Devices

Malicious Apps were designed to send text messages to premium numbers

Researchers at Russian anti-virus company Doctor Web recently uncovered three malicious Android apps on Google Play that install the Android.SmsSend Trojan, which sends text messages to premium numbers without the user's permission.

All three apps, which are audio players and a video player that displays adult content, were uploaded by a Vietnamese developer called AppStore Jsc.

According to Doctor Web, the apps have been installed between 11,000 and 25,000 times.

Each app asks the user for permission to download additional content, such as adult video clips in the case of the video app -- but that download the installs the Trojan.

"The program covertly sends short messages to the short number 8775 which is specified in the malware's configuration file," Doctor Web notes.

"It is noteworthy that this Trojan really does enable a user to view adult video clips. Apparently, the attackers implemented this feature to avoid unnecessary suspicion."

NIST Updates Malware & Patch Management Guideines

First Revisions to Both Publications in Eight Years

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has published new guidance on malware incident prevention and handling for desktops and laptops as well as enterprise patch management technologies.

NIST Special Publication 800-83 Revision 1, "Guide to Malware Incident Prevention and Handling for Desktops and Laptops," provides recommendations for improving an organization's malware incident prevention measures. The publication also gives extensive recommendations for enhancing an organization's existing incident response capability so that it is better prepared to handle malware incidents, particularly widespread ones. Malware is the most common external threat to most hosts, causing widespread damage and disruption and necessitating extensive recovery efforts.

SP 800-40 Revision 3, "Guide to Enterprise Patch Management Technologies," provides an overview of enterprise patch management technologies. It also briefly discusses metrics for assessing the technologies' effectiveness. The publication is designed to assist organizations in understanding the basics of enterprise patch management technologies. Patch management is the process of identifying, acquiring, installing and verifying patches for products and systems.

NIST also issued SP 800-165, "2012 Computer Security Division Annual Report," which highlights the activities of NIST's Computer Security Division during fiscal year 2012, which ended Sept. 30.

Hackers can control almost all Android phones

NINETY-nine per cent of all Android devices are vulnerable to hacking or being completely taken over remotely by cyber criminals

This is the claim of a study by BlueBox security, a mobile security company which claims it has discovered a flaw in the operating system of almost all Google phones and tablets (which runs on the operating system Android) that allows hackers to modify its code in a way that "turns any legitimate application into a malicious Trojan" virus.

The company claims this vulnerability exists on any Android phone or tablet released over the last four years, affecting approximately 900 million devices.

According to the researchers the issue is central to Google's open source operating system and so far only one device has been patched.

The way it works:

Rather than creating a malicious app, cyber criminals wait for legitimate apps to be approved for sale and then go in and modify the code after and create an exploit that allows them to take over people's phones via the app.

This flaw would allow hackers to access your passwords, credit card information, emails, any information you store on your phone.

So what can I do about this?

  • Do not allow apps from unkown sources. To do this go to Settings, Security and untick "allow unknown sources".
  • It's recommended that users update their operating system to the latest version.
  • if you have any apps which store your personal information such as credit card or PayPal information (like eBay, Amazon or Etsy), you should remove this information immediately.
  • Remove any personal information from your phone (do you have your credit card pin stored in your notes?

Beware of "Facebook Black"

"Facebook Black" malware spreading fast on Facebook

A new virus is hitting Facebook users with an Fake Facebook Black template which would allow the users to use an black template instead of the known white template.

The malware is spreading crazy on Facebook as it asks the users to click on a link that will install an application. This Black Facebook scam uses the trust of the Facebook users and then forwards the malware to their network and friends.

So please be warned do not click on the Facebook black template.


Revoke access

This malware uses an Facebook API to gain information. If you wish to revoke the access of the Facebook Black template virus then you have to do the following:

  • Navigate to the following url: http://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=applications
  • Search for the Facebook Black malware and delete it.

How Facebook Got Hacked?

Zero-Day Exploit Bypassed Java Protections to Install Malware

Even the most savvy information technologists aren't immune from cyber-attacks. Just ask Facebook. The social-media titan says it fell victim to a sophisticated attack discovered in January in which an exploit allowed malware to be installed on employees' laptops.

In a blog posted by Facebook Security on Feb. 15, the company said it found no evidence that Facebook user data was compromised.

Here's what happened at Facebook, according to its blog:

Several Facebook employees visited a mobile developer website that was compromised.

The compromised website hosted an exploit that then allowed malware to be installed on these employees' laptops. "The laptops were fully-patched and running up-to-date anti-virus software," the blog says.

"As soon as we discovered the presence of the malware, we remediated all infected machines, informed law enforcement and began a significant investigation that continues to this day." Facebook Security flagged a suspicious domain in its corporate DNS (Domain Name Servers) logs and tracked it back to an employee laptop.

The security team conducted a forensic examination of that laptop and identified a malicious file, and then searched company-wide and flagged several other compromised employee laptops.

The social-media company says it is working with law enforcement and the other organizations affected by this attack. "It is in everyone's interests for our industry to work together to prevent attacks such as these in the future," Facebook says.

The Facebook attack is reminiscent of the 2011 breach at security provider RSA, when a well-crafted e-mail tricked an RSA employee to retrieve from a junk-mail folder and open a message containing a virus that led to a sophisticated attack on the company's information systems

Top 5 deadliest mobile malware threats of 2012

The most prolific and complex mobile malware threats to appear so far in 2012

While the amount of malicious software focused on the growing number of mobile devices on the market remains a drop in the bucket next to the amount targeting PCs, attackers are steadily turning the devices in consumers' pockets into targets.

So far this year, several pieces of malware have popped onto the radar and underscored the growing sophistication of cybercriminals targeting mobile devices. After fielding feedback from security pros, here in no particular order is Dark Reading's list of the five most dangerous, sophisticated, and prolific pieces of mobile malware that have appeared thus far in 2012.

1. FakeInst SMS Trojan and its variants "FakeInst disguises itself as popular apps like Instagram, Opera Browser, [and] Skype, and sends SMS messages to premium-rate numbers," says Jerry Yang, vice president engineering at mobile security firm TrustGo.

It is selected because it has been widely infected. There are many variants in the FakeInst family, such as RuWapFraud, Depositmobi, Opfake, and JiFake. Sixty percent of total Android malware we found belong to the FakeInst family. Geographically, it mainly exists in Russia. There are also samples found from all over the world.

2. SMSZombie, which was recently spotted in third-party markets in China and has infected more than 500,000 devices in the past few weeks. The malware works by sending SMS messages to China Mobile's online payment system and "top-up designated accounts. 

The amount of payment, frequency, and destination are all controlled by malware developer. It is significant because it takes extra steps to protect itself. Once installed, it obtains Device Admin privileges and is very difficult to remove, prompting TrustGo to publish details of a manual removal process on its blog. We expect more Android malware will adopt similar techniques to protect themselves.

3. NotCompatible discovered by Lookout Mobile Security in April, NotCompatible is the first piece of mobile malware that used websites as a targeted distribution method, notes Derek Halliday, lead security product manager at Lookout. 

NotCompatible is automatically downloaded when an Android browser visits an infected website. The downloaded application is disguised as a security update in an attempt to convince the user to install it. If it successfully installed, NotCompatible can potentially be used to gain access to private networks by turning an infected Android device into a network proxy, and can be used to gain access to protected information or systems.

4. Android.Bmaster bundled in with legitimate applications, Android.Bmaster was spotted on a third-party Android app market earlier this year. The majority of the infected victims were Chinese users.

Once on the device, the malware swiped sensitive data from the phone, including the Cell ID, location area code, and IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number, and caused users to send SMS messages to premium numbers. 

Analysis of Android.Bmaster's command-and-control servers indicate the total number of infected devices connected to the botnet over its entire life span numbered in the hundreds of thousands. The number of infected devices able to generate revenue on any given day ranged from 10,000 to 30,000, enough to potentially net the botmaster millions of dollars annually if the infection rates are sustained.

Once installed, the application displays a black icon with the text "testService," and opens a backdoor on the device to steal information. Luckycat is the first APT [advanced persistent threat] targeting Android platform. It is a Trojan horse for Android devices that opens a back door and steals information on the infected device.

New malware "Mirage" targeting energy firms

Malware targets individuals via "spear-phishing" e-mails bearing tainted PDF files

Researchers have uncovered a new cyberespionage campaign being waged on a large Philippine oil company, a Taiwanese military organization and a Canadian energy firm, as well as targets in Brazil, Israel, Egypt and Nigeria. 

The malware being used is called "Mirage" and it leaves a backdoor on the computer that waits for instructions from the attacker, said Silas Cutler, a security researcher at Dell SecureWorks' Counter Threat Unit (CTU). Victims are carefully targeted with so-called "spear-phishing" e-mails with attachments that are "droppers" designed to look and behave like PDF documents.

However, they are actually standalone executable files that open an embedded PDF file and execute the Mirage trojan. The malware disguises its "phone home" communications to resemble Google searches by using Secure Socket Layers (SSL) in order to avoid detection, Cutler wrote in a report this week.

Researchers were able to take over domains being used in the campaign that were no longer registered or had expired and they used them to set up a "sinkhole" designed to receive any communications from infected computers. By pretending to be a command-and-control server they learned that there were about 80 unique IP addresses that appeared to be infected, involving as many as 120 individual computers.

"Deeper analysis of the phone-home requests and correlation with social networking sites allowed CTU researchers to identify a specific individual infected with Mirage. It was an executive-level finance manager of the Phillipine-based oil company," the report says.

Researchers couldn't say what data the attackers were aiming for, but it's not difficult to speculate given that countries are vying for oil and gas exploration rights in the South China Sea. It's unclear who is behind the campaign, but whoever sponsored it is "well funded and very active," said Joe Stewart, director of malware research at Dell SecureWorks.

While he declined to speculate who sponsored the campaign, the report said proxy software used on some of the command-and-control servers was created by a member of a Chinese hacker group called the "Honker Union of China." 

"We interrupted their command chain, so we don't know what documents they're looking for," he said. "Typically it's competitive information." The researchers believe that whoever is responsible also played a part an espionage campaign earlier in the year that targeted Vietnamese oil companies and government ministries, an embassy, a nuclear safety agency and others in various countries.

The command-and-control IP addresses used in the Mirage campaign belong to the China Beijing Province Network, as did three of the IP addresses used in the earlier "Sin Digoo" malware campaign, according to the researchers. This is the latest in a number of reports of international cyberespionage that have cropped up in recent years, with energy, defense and critical infrastructure firms increasingly being targeted.

NIST guidelines will help you keep pace with changing Malicious Code Threat

As malicious code rapidly evolves, the National Institute of Standards and Technology is updating its guidance to reflect changes in the threat malware presents organizations.

NISTG says is the just-published draft of Special Publication 800-83 Revision 1: Guide to Malware Incident Prevention and Handling for Desktops and Laptops.
"Unlike most malware threats several years ago, which tended to be fast-spreading and easy to notice, many of today's malware threats are more stealthy, specifically designed to quietly, slowly spread to other hosts, gathering information over extended periods of time and eventually leading to exfiltration of sensitive data and other negative impacts.
NIST, in announcing the draft revision, points out that protecting desktops and laptops remains critical even as many government agencies and companies focus on mobile security.

The guidance provides information on the major categories of malware that afflict desktop and laptop computers and furnishes practical procedures on how to prevent malware incidents and what to do when a system becomes infected.

To battle malware, the NIST guidance suggests organizations should:

  1. Develop and implement an approach to malware incident prevention.
  2. Plan and implement an approach to malware incident prevention based on the attack vectors that are most likely to be used now and in the near future.
  3. Ensure that their policies address prevention of malware incidents.
  4. Incorporate malware incident prevention and handling into their awareness programs.
  5. Implement awareness programs that include guidance to users on malware incident prevention.
  6. Maintain vulnerability mitigation capabilities to help prevent malware incidents.
  7. Document policy, processes and procedures to mitigate vulnerabilities that malware might exploit.
  8. Apply threat mitigation capabilities to assist in containing malware incidents.
  9. Perform threat mitigation to detect and stop malware before it can affect its targets.
  10. Consider using defensive architecture methods to reduce the impact of malware incidents.
  11. Sustain a robust incident response process capability that addresses malware incident handling.
NIST is seeking comments from stakeholders on the draft. Comments can be sent to 800-83comments@nist.gov by Aug. 31. A final revision is expected to be published by late summer.

Nobody can halt cyberweapons creation

The decision by the United States and Israel to develop and then deploy the Stuxnet computer worm against an Iranian nuclear facility late in George W. Bush's presidency marked a significant and dangerous turning point in the gradual militarization of the Internet.


Washington has begun to cross the Rubicon. If it continues, contemporary warfare will change fundamentally as we move into hazardous and uncharted territory. It is one thing to write viruses and lock them away safely for future use should circumstances dictate it. It is quite another to deploy them in peacetime.


Stuxnet has effectively fired the starting gun in a new arms race that is very likely to lead to the spread of similar and still more powerful offensive cyberweaponry across the Internet. Unlike nuclear or chemical weapons, however, countries are developing cyberweapons outside any regulatory framework. There is no international treaty or agreement restricting the use of cyberweapons, which can do anything from controlling an individual laptop to disrupting an entire country's critical telecommunications or banking infrastructure.


It is in the United States' interest to push for one before the monster it has unleashed comes home to roost. Stuxnet was originally deployed with the specific aim of infecting the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in Iran. This required sneaking a memory stick into the plant to introduce the virus to its private and secure "offline" network. But despite Natanz's isolation, Stuxnet somehow escaped into the cyberwild, eventually affecting hundreds of thousands of systems worldwide.


This is one of the frightening dangers of an uncontrolled arms race in cyberspace; once released, virus developers generally lose control of their inventions, which will inevitably seek out and attack the networks of innocent parties. Moreover, all countries that possess an offensive cyber capability will be tempted to use it now that the first shot has been fired. Until recent revelations by The New York Times' David E. Sanger, there was no definitive proof that America was behind Stuxnet.


Now computer security experts have found a clear link between its creators and a newly discovered virus called Flame, which transforms infected computers into multipurpose espionage tools and has infected machines across the Middle East. The United States has long been a commendable leader in combating the spread of malicious computer code, known as malware, that pranksters, criminals, intelligence services and terrorist organizations have been using to further their own ends.


But by introducing such pernicious viruses as Stuxnet and Flame, America has severely undermined its moral and political credibility. Flame circulated on the Web for at least four years and evaded detection by the big antivirus operators like McAfee, Symantec, Kaspersky Labs and F-Secure - companies that are vital to ensuring that law-abiding consumers can go about their business on the Web unmolested by the army of malware writers, who release nasty computer code onto the Internet to steal our money, data, intellectual property or identities. But senior industry figures have now expressed deep worries about the state-sponsored release of the most potent malware ever seen.


During the cold war, countries' chief assets were missiles with nuclear warheads. Generally their number and location was common knowledge, as was the damage they could inflict and how long it would take them to inflict it. Advanced cyberwar is different: A country's assets lie as much in the weaknesses of enemy computer defenses as in the power of the weapons it possesses. So in order to assess one's own capability, there is a strong temptation to penetrate the enemy's systems before a conflict erupts. It is no good trying to hit them once hostilities have broken out; they will be prepared and there's a risk that they already will have infected your systems.


Once the logic of cyberwarfare takes hold, it is worryingly pre-emptive and can lead to the uncontrolled spread of malware. Until now, America has been reluctant to discuss regulation of the Internet with Russia and China. Washington believes any moves toward a treaty might undermine its presumed superiority in the field of cyberweaponry and robotics. And it fears that Moscow and Beijing would exploit a global regulation of military activity on the Web, in order to justify and further strengthen the powerful tools they already use to restrict their citizens' freedom on the Net.


The United States must now consider entering into discussions, anathema though they may be, with the world's major powers about the rules governing the Internet as a military domain. Any agreement should regulate only military uses of the Internet and should specifically avoid any clauses that might affect private or commercial use of the Web.


Nobody can halt the worldwide rush to create cyberweapons, but a treaty could prevent their deployment in peacetime and allow for a collective response to countries or organizations that violate it. Technical superiority is not written in stone, and the United States is arguably more dependent on networked computer systems than any other country in the world.


Washington must halt the spiral toward an arms race, which, in the long term, it is not guaranteed to win.

Beware fake Chrome installers for Windows.

Fake Google Chrome Installer Steals Banking Details


A file named "ChromeSetup.exe" is being offered for download on various websites, and the link to the file appears to be legitimately hosted on Facebook and Google domains. In reality, the software won't install Google's Chrome browser, but an information-stealing Trojan application known as Banker, according to antivirus vendor Trend Micro.


Once the malware--which appears to be targeting Latin American users, especially in Brazil and Peru--is executed, it relays the IP address and operating system version to one of two command-and-control (C&C) servers, then downloads a configuration file. After that, whenever a user of the infected PC visits one of a number of banking websites, the malware intercepts the HTTP request, redirects the user to a fake banking page, and also pops up a dialog box informing the user that new security software will be installed.


In fact, the malware has been designed uninstall GbPlugin, which is "software that protects Brazilian bank customers when performing online banking transactions," said Trend Micro security researcher Brian Cayanan in a blog post. "It does this through the aid of gb_catchme.exe--a legitimate tool from GMER called Catchme, which was originally intended to uninstall malicious software. The bad guys, in this case, are using the tool for their malicious agendas."
