How secure is "Dropbox"?

What's Dropbox?

Dropbox is a free and extremely easy-to-use tool for sharing files, photos, and videos, and syncing them among your devices. You can also use Dropbox to back up files and access them from other computers and devices (including smartphones and tablets), with dedicated apps for each device you own running Android, Mac Linux, Blackberry or iOS platform.

Dropbox is especially good for backing up your files online, although the biggest barriers to this are the size of your backups. You get 2GB free with Dropbox, or you can choose 100GB, 200GB, or 500GB with a monthly fee. There are also business plans that start at 1TB for five users. You’ll just have to make sure that the files you want backed up live in the Dropbox folder.

Dropbox also has the ability to share files with others. And, if your computer melts down, you can restore all your files from the Dropbox website.

Is Dropbox "Safe" to use?

The move on hosted services like Dropbox storage site raises questions about what cloud users can and should do to keep their information and data secure and compliant.

Cloud security drew attention in 2012 with Dropbox’s admission that usernames and passwords stolen from other websites had been used to sign into a small number of its accounts.

A Dropbox employee had used the same password for all his accounts, including his work account with access to sensitive data. When that password was stolen elsewhere, the attacker discovered that it could be used against Dropbox.

This was a powerful reminder that users should rely on different passwords for each secure site and service.

Also, VentureBeat reported that the Dropbox iOS app was storing user login credentials in unencrypted text files—where they would be visible to anyone who had physical access to the phone.

What Encryption does Dropbox use?

Dropbox claims:
At Dropbox, the security of your data is our highest priority. We have a dedicated security team using the best tools and engineering practices available to build and maintain Dropbox, and you can rest assured that we’ve implemented multiple levels of security to protect and back up your files. You can also take advantage of two-step verification, a login authentication feature which you can enable to add another layer of security to your account.
When it comes to encryption methods Dropbox use, they state that:

  • Dropbox uses modern encryption methods to both transfer and store your data.
  • Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and AES-256 bit encryption.
  • Dropbox website and client software are constantly being hardened to enhance security and protect against attacks.
  • Two-step verification is available for an extra layer of security at login. You can choose to receive security codes by text message or via any Time-Based One-Time Password (TOTP) apps, such as those listed here.
  • Public files are only viewable by people who have a link to the file(s).
Dropbox uses Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) for storage, which has a robust security policy of its own. You can find more information on Amazon’s data security from the S3 site or, read more about how Dropbox and Amazon securely stores data.

How to Secure your Dropbox account?

Popular cloud storage service Dropbox, had a history of security problems, ranging from compromised accounts to allowing access to every Dropbox account without requiring password.

When and if you decide to use cloud services like Dropbox, the following three basic steps can help you protect your data:


  • Apply web-based policies using URL filtering, controlling access to public cloud storage websites and preventing users from browsing to sites you’ve declared off-limits.
  • Use application controls to block or allow particular applications, either for the entire company or for specific group.
  • Automatically encrypt files before they are uploaded to the cloud from any managed endpoint. An encryption solution allows users to choose their preferred cloud storage services, because the files are always encrypted and the keys are always your own. And because encryption takes place on the client before any data is synchronised, you have full control of the safety of your data.You won’t have to worry if the security of your cloud storage provider is breached. Central keys give authorized users or groups access to files and keep these files encrypted for everyone else . Should your web key go missing for some reason—maybe the user simply forgot the password—the security officer inside the enterprise would have access to the keys in order to make sure the correct people have access to that file.
How to secure your Dropbox account?
  • Enable Two-Step Verification - With two-step verification enabled, you’ll have to enter both your password and a security code from your mobile phone whenever you sign into the Dropbox website or add a new device to your account. Even if someone else knows your Dropbox password, they won’t be able to log In without the time-sensitive code from your phone.
  • Unlink devices you don’t use and view web sessions.
  • Get email notifications - Ensure email notifications are enabled so you’ll receive emails when new devices and apps connect to your account.
  • Manage linked Applications – Third-party apps often require full access to your Dropbox account, and the app retains access even if you stop using it. If the app itself is compromised or starts behaving maliciously in the future, it will be able to do damage.
  • Don’t reuse your passwords – You should use a unique password for your Dropbox account, one that you haven’t used for any other services.
  • Encrypt your Dropbox files – To protect yourself and ensure your sensitive files remain secure, you can encrypt the files you store in your Dropbox account. To access the encrypted files, you’ll need to know the encryption password – anyone without the encryption key will only see random, jumbled nonsense data.

The Internet of Things

"The Internet of Things" is now finding its way into mainstream conversation!

Once a term used mostly by MIT professors and those steeped in the privacy and security field, "The Internet of Things" is now finding its way into mainstream conversation. Loosely defined as the practice of equipping all objects and people in the world with wirelessly connected, identifying, computing devices, the term represents what could be a hugely transformational way of life.  

At one time, "The Internet of Things" probably sounded like science fiction; but today, it's becoming very real. Here are a few examples of where you can literally see, hear and almost feel this phenomenon occurring in some very ordinary places:
  • TRENDnet marketed its SecurView video cameras as "secure." In fact, the cameras had faulty software that allowed anyone with the cameras' Internet addresses to hear and see what the cameras were capturing. In fact, more than 700 were hacked, creating live-streams of private locations and private moments online for the world to hear and see.      
  • Google possesses possibly more data about consumers' online activities than any other organization (Facebook, Microsoft, IBM would probably be close behind.). Now it seems, the Internet giant is on track to know as much about your offline behavior. The company recently purchased Nest, which makes "smart" thermostats and smoke/fire alarms that track indoor-activity data. They have stated they plan to create many more of these types of smart gadgets. How much personal information will Nest share with Google, and how will that information be used?
  • A range of smart-home and smart-car technology allows consumers the ability to control access and features of their houses and vehicles. But who else might gain the same level of control? And what will happen when "smart" cars and appliances can function on their own without human intervention? As this Guardian article contends, they will certainly be tempting to hackers.

DDoS Security Checklist

Help I am under DDoS!! What should I do?

DoS or Denial of Service is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users. When such a DoS is carried out by a large number of attack sources, it is called DDoS or Distributed Denial of Service.

Basic types are:

  • Consumption of computational resources
  • Disruption of configuration information
  • Disruption of state information
  • Disruption of physical network
  • Disruption of the communication media between the victim and its intended users.

How can I prevent DDoS?

While it would be incorrect to say that DDoS attacks can be prevented, the impact can be mitigated and even thwarted if your IT infrastructure is sufficiently hardened, distributed and secured. We have listed some of the preventive steps below:

  • Use rate-limiting in firewalls, routers, load balancers and other network perimeter devices.
  • Enable TCP SYN cookie protection.
  • Test your applications and deployment architecture for DoS vulnerabilities and fix them.
  • Conduct regular configuration audits of your perimeter devices.
  • Use updated software/firmware
  • Use updated Anti-virus and regularly check for malware, bots on your systems. (This way you are less likely to contribute to DDoS on others).
  • Use multiple ISPs or hosting providers for redundancy.
  • Maintain a backup site for quick switchover.
  • Install or configure network monitoring systems which can alert you as soon as any DDoS hits.
  • Check with your ISPs or hosting providers how they handle DDoS and be aware of financial implications in case you are hit with a massive DDoS.

Dealing with a DDoS underway is incredibly difficult. The first step should be to try to understand the type and source of the attack. Understanding the attack type greatly helps in effectively dealing with the attack. Some of the things that you may consider are:

  • Blackholing and sinkholing
  • Enable rate-limiting in firewalls, routers, load balancers and other network perimeter devices.
  • Obtain a new IP address or range from your ISP or hosting provider if the attacker is targeting an IP address or range. If you have multiple ISPs then try switching your primary ISP.
  • Switch to something like Akamai, Cloudflare or Incapsula who have known expertise to handle DDoS.

What to do post the incident?

  • Conduct a root cause analysis and ensure that no other malicious activity was done on your servers other than DDoS.
  • If blackholing or sinkholing was done, restore the same.
  • If the preventive measures listed above are missing, you may consider implementing some of them to be better prepared.

Think someone may be reading your emails?

Encrypt them, and they can't

Are you sending confidential information in your email, text and instant messages? If so, you could be exposing it to a lot of peeping eyes...and they may decide to do bad things with it!

Here are some ways to encrypt your digital messages:

  • In Outlook, within your message, go to File, Properties, Security Settings, and click the box for "Encrypt message contents and attachments."
  • If you use some type of webmail, most good ones offer SSL as a security option; use it. It encrypts the messages *while they are traveling through the Internet.*

    However, it is not the same as encrypting the message itself. Your messages are still in clear text within the mail box storage, and when forwarded elsewhere not using an SSL-encrypted transmission method.
  • For webmail, consider getting an add-on tool, such as Armacrypt.
  • Another email option is Hushmail.
  • Consider using an up-to-date version of PGP.
  • Here's a pretty good discussion of encrypting text messages on Android devices.
  • Here are some smartphone encryption apps to consider.

Useful TIP! Don't send any sensitive or confidential information using social network messaging systems, such as Facebook mail. While you can have the *connection* (meaning while it is traveling from you to your recipient) encrypted using SSL, it does not encrypt the message itself, leaving it in clear text within the many Facebook repositories.

A new virus is hitting Facebook users with an Fake Facebook Black template which would allow the users to use an black template instead of the known white template.

The malware is spreading crazy on Facebook as it asks the users to click on a link that will install an application. This Black Facebook scam uses the trust of the Facebook users and then forwards the malware to their network and friends.

So please be warned do not click on the Facebook black template.


Revoke access

This malware uses an Facebook API to gain information. If you wish to revoke the access of the Facebook Black template virus then you have to do the following:

  • Navigate to the following url: http://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=applications
  • Search for the Facebook Black malware and delete it.

Techniques to Protect Yourself on Social Networks

Vigilance continues to spearhead the security and, thus, the privacy of the information. It can be broken down into a few techniques that are simple but could make all the difference:

Choice of “friends” and contacts—Users should be extremely careful in their choice of friends on these networks. It is common practice to accept contact from friends of friends who are frequently complete strangers. This can lead to one’s private life being exposed to potentially harmful individuals.

Restricting private content to close friends and family only—Social networking sites are increasingly allowing their users to configure restrictions on access to their information. It is, therefore, important to use these restrictions and to ensure that they are properly configured, given that our information is public by default.

Careful choice of information to be broadcast—The key to the protection of privacy is, in fact, what information one broadcasts. Name, surname, date of birth, place of birth, photos, videos, comments and opinions should be carefully screened prior to being posted. Keep in mind that information posted on a network may one day be used against its author.

Awareness—Every sector of the population should be made aware of the need to protect themselves against the risk that the use of social networks may entail. In the business world, this awareness must form part of the IT security program.

Finally, social networks are a great way to express oneself and share with others. They help users lift the barriers of space and time and communicate with the world. However, there is another side associated with the proven dangers of user privacy violation.

These dangers are even more of a threat now thanks to the increasingly widespread trend of registering on several sites using a single user account. In response to this situation, each Internet user must remain vigilant and governments must put more pressure on the operators of these sites to safeguard the security of Internet users.

10 Simple Things To Protect Your Privacy

Some of the easiest things you can do to protect your privacy

These are the really, really simple things you should be doing to keep casual intruders from invading your privacy.

1. Password protect your devices: your smartphone, your iPad, your computer, your tablet, etc. Some open bookers tell me it’s “annoying” to take two seconds to type in a password before they can use their phone. Choosing not to password protect these devices is the digital equivalent of leaving your home or car unlocked.

If you’re lucky, no one will take advantage of the access. Or maybe the contents will be ravaged and your favorite speakers and/or secrets stolen. If you’re not paranoid enough, spend some time reading entries in Reddit Relationships, where many an Internet user goes to discuss issues of the heart. 

2. Put a Google Alert on your name. This is an incredibly easy way to stay on top of what’s being said about you online. It takes less than a minute to do. Go here. Enter your name, and variations of your name, with quotation marks around it. Boom. You’re done.

3. Sign out of Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, etc. when you’re done with your emailing, social networking, tweeting, and other forms of time-wasting. Not only will this slightly reduce the amount of tracking of you as you surf the Web, this prevents someone who later sits down at your computer from loading one of these up and getting snoopy. If you’re using someone else’s or a public computer, this is especially important. Yes, people actually forget to do this, with terribles outcomes.

4. Don’t give out your personal details when asked. Obviously, if a sketchy dude in a bar asks for your phone number, you say no. But when the asker is a uniform-wearing employee at Best Buy, many a consumer hands over their digits when asked. Stores often use this info to help profile you and your purchase. You can say no. If you feel badly about it, just pretend the employee is the sketchy dude in the bar.

5. Encrypt your computer. The word “encrypt” may sound like a betrayal of the simplicity I promised in the headline, but this is actually quite easy to do, especially if you’re a MacHead. Encrypting your computer means that someone has to have your password (or encryption key) in order to peek at its contents should they get access to your hard drive. On a Mac, you just go to your settings, choose “Security and Privacy,” go to “FileVault,” choose the “Turn on FileVault” option. Boom goes the encryption dynamite. PC folk need to use Bitlocker.

6. Gmailers, turn on 2-step authentication in Gmail. The biggest takeaway from the epic hack of Wired’s Mat Honan was that it probably wouldn’t have happened if he’d turned on “2-step verification” in Gmail. This simple little step turns your phone into a security fob — in order for your Gmail account to be accessed from a new device, a person (hopefully you) needs a code that’s sent to your phone. This means that even if someone gets your password somehow, they won’t be able to use it to sign into your account from a strange computer. Google says that millions of people use this tool, and that “thousands more enroll each day.” Be one of those people. The downside: It’s annoying if your phone battery dies or if you’re traveling abroad. The upside: you can print a piece of paper to take with you. Alternately, you can turn it off when you’re going to be abroad or phone-less. Or you can leave it permanently turned off, and increase your risk of getting epically hacked. Decision’s yours.

7. Pay in cash for embarrassing items. Don’t want a purchase to be easily tracked back to you? You’ve seen the movies! Use cash. One data mining CEO says this is how he pays for hamburgers and junk food these days.

8. Change Your Facebook settings to “Friends Only.” You’d think with the many Facebook privacy stories over the years that everyone would have their accounts locked down and boarded up like Florida houses before a hurricane. Not so. There are still plenty of Facebookers that are as exposed on the platform as Katy Perry at a water park. Visit your Facebook privacy settings. Make sure this “default privacy” setting isn’t set to public, and if it’s set to “Custom,” make sure you know and are comfortable with any “Networks” you’re sharing with.

9. Clear your browser history and cookies on a regular basis. When’s the last time you did that? If you just shrugged, consider changing your browser settings so that this is automatically cleared every session. Go to the “privacy” setting in your Browser’s “Options.” Tell it to “never remember your history.” This will reduce the amount you’re tracked online. Consider a browser add-on like TACO to further reduce tracking of your online behavior.

10. Use an IP masker. When you visit a website, you leave a footprint behind in the form of IP information. If you want to visit someone’s blog without their necessarily knowing it’s you — say if you’re checking out a biz competitor, a love interest, or an ex — you should consider masking your computer’s fingerprint, which at the very least gives away your approximate location and service provider. To do this, you can download Tor or use an easy browser-based option like HideMyAss.com

Ignoring these is like sending your personal information out onto the trapeze without a safety net. It might do fine… or it could get ugly.

5 Tips to Improve Intrusion Detection

NIST Revising Guide on Detection, Prevention Software


Intrusion detection and prevention software has become a necessary addition to the information security infrastructure of many organizations, so the National Institute of Standards and Technology is updating its guidance to help organizations to employ the appropriate programs.


NIST is seeking comments from stakeholders on the guidance, Special Publication 800-93, Revision 1 (Draft): Guide to Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems, before publishing a final version. SP 800-93 describes the characteristics of intrusion detection and prevention software technologies and provides recommendations for designing, implementing, configuring, securing, monitoring and maintaining them.


The types of intrusion detection and prevention technologies differ primarily by the types of events that they monitor and the ways in which they are deployed. The NIST publication addresses four types of intrusion detection and prevention software technologies:

  • Network-based, which monitors network traffic for particular network segments or devices and analyzes the network and application protocol activity to identify suspicious activity.
  • Wireless, which monitors wireless network traffic and analyzes it to identify suspicious activity involving the wireless networking protocols themselves. IDPS for wireless is an important type for all organizations to have because of the growth of mobile devices and employees' desire to use their own wireless device for work.
  • Network Behavior Analysis, which examines network traffic to identify threats that generate unusual traffic flows, such as denial of service attacks, certain forms of malware and policy violations such as client system providing network services to other systems.
  • Host-based, which monitors the characteristics of a single host and the events occurring within that host for suspicious activity.

Intrusion detection systems automate the intrusion detection process whereas intrusion prevention systems have all the capabilities of an intrusion detection system and also can attempt to stop possible incidents. These technologies offer many of the same capabilities, and administrators can usually disable prevention features in intrusion protection products, causing them to function as intrusion detection software.


The Recommendations NIST says organizations that implement the following recommendations should facilitate more efficient and effective intrusion detection and prevention system use:

  1. Organizations should ensure that all intrusion detection and provision system components are secured appropriately because these systems are often targeted by attackers who want to prevent them from detecting attacks or want to gain access to sensitive information in the intrusion detection and prevention system, such as host configurations and known vulnerabilities.
  2. Organizations should consider using multiple types of intrusion detection and prevention technologies to achieve more comprehensive and accurate detection and prevention of malicious activity. The four primary types of intrusion detection and prevention technologies - network-based, wireless, network behavior analysis and host-based - each offer fundamentally different information gathering, logging, detection and prevention capabilities.
  3. Organizations planning to use multiple types of intrusion detection and prevention technologies or multiple products of the same technology type should consider whether or not the systems should be integrated. Direct intrusion detection and prevention system integration most often occurs when an organization uses multiple products from a single vendor, by having a single console that can be used to manage and monitor the multiple products. Some products can also mutually share data, which can speed the analysis process and help users to better prioritize threats.
  4. Before evaluating intrusion detection and prevention products, organizations should define the requirements that the products should meet. Evaluators must understand the characteristics of the organization's system and network environments, so that a compatible intrusion detection and prevention system can be selected that can monitor the events of interest on the systems and/or networks.
  5. When evaluating intrusion detection and prevention products, organizations should consider using a combination of several sources of data on the products' characteristics and capabilities. Common product data sources include test lab or real-world product testing, vendor-provided information, third-party product reviews and previous experience from individuals within the organization and trusted individuals at other organizations.

Don't Get Burned by Twitter Updated-Privacy Policy

Twitter Carries a Torch for Privacy


In mid-May, Twitter published an updated privacy policy, which every Twitter user should read - and other social media sites would be smart to emulate. The policy includes a clearer explanation of the situations in which Twitter will share user information with others.


Most notably, the policy provides better clarifications about how your personal information is used than most other social media sites. The updates include a new section on how Twitter tailors content. It makes clear that Twitter can use users' contact information to help third-party services, client applications and others find Twitter accounts.


While that particular practice is not new, it is much more clearly stated today. The policy also indicates how users can opt-out of several data-sharing practices, which is incredibly important to privacy-minded individuals.


You may find Twitter very helpful to use for sharing information, learning of breaking news and doing research. It's a good option; just make sure you set your privacy settings appropriately.

New Study Shows Internet Vulnerabilities Drop, Yet Risks Rise

Symantec 2011 Security Trends: Beware Insider Threats


There's some good news on the cybersecurity front, for a change: The number of Internet vulnerabilities identified by Symantec dropped 20 percent last year, according to the security technology company's just-released annual Internet Security Threat Report.


The tone of the rest of the report, however, isn't so optimistic. In fact, it's downright gloomy, as the company cautioned the IT security community about an 81 percent uptick in malicious attacks and the expectation of more to come in 2012.


IT managers jittery about defending their organizations' information systems should look over their shoulders from time to time. The insider, as we've been told time and time again, remains - and is likely to continue to be - one of the biggest threats.
"While external threats will continue to multiply, the insider threat will also create headlines, as employees act intentionally - and unintentionally - to leak or steal valuable data," Symantec notes.
Why? Because we're not doing enough to educate employees and customers about security and risk. Symantec's Global Intelligence Network monitors hacking and Internet attacks in more than 200 countries and territories. It also maintains a database that holds almost 48,000 recorded vulnerabilities from nearly 16,000 global vendors.


So, Symantec's analysis is one of the best available, at least where Internet security threats and trends are concerned. The actual number of Internet vulnerabilities identified by Symantec dropped 20 percent from 2010, and Symantec, for its part, blocked more than 5.5 billion malicious attacks in 2011 -- 81 percent more than it blocked the previous year.


Hacking exposed more than 187.2 million identities last year, Symantec found. But the root of most data breaches is not linked to hacks; it's linked to old-fashioned theft and/or sloppy security, such as through the loss of a laptop.


Symantec does offer advice, such as keeping antivirus software up-to-date and enforcing effective password policies. All important, but without the education piece, we won't have a fighting chance.

Tips to minimize the risk of identity fraud

Javelin Strategy & Research recommends that consumers follow a three-step approach to minimize their risk and impact of identity fraud.

Prevention
  1. Keep personal data private - At home, at work and on your mobile devices, secure your personal and financial records in a locked storage device or behind a password. Of those consumers who knew how the crimes were committed, nine percent of all identity fraud crimes were committed by someone previously known to the victim in 2011.

    Avoid mailing checks to pay bills or to deposit funds in your banking account. Use online bill payment on a secure Internet access (not a public Wi-Fi hotspot) instead and direct deposit payroll checks.

  2. Be social, be responsible - While social networks are popular, be careful about publicly exposing personal information that is typically used for authentication (full birthdate, high school name). This applies to all social networks.

  3. Use mobile devices responsibly - Mobile devices are a treasure trove of information for fraudsters. The "always on" functionality of mobile devices provides fraudsters with new avenues for securing information. Be sure of the applications you download, the data you share over public Wi-Fi and where you leave your devices.

  4. Ask questions - Before providing any information on mobile phones, social media sites and transactions sites, question who is asking for the information? Why do they need it? How is the information being used? If volunteering information, ask yourself if you have more to gain or more to lose by sharing personal and unnecessary details.
Detection
  1. Take control - In 2011, 43 percent of fraud was first detected by the victims. By monitoring accounts online at bank and credit card websites, and setting up alerts that can be sent via e-mail and to a mobile device, consumers can more quickly detect if they are a victim of identity fraud and stop it early.

  2. Learn about methods to protect your identity - There is a wide array of services available to consumers who want extra protection and peace of mind. These include credit monitoring, fraud alerts, credit freezes and database scanning.

    Some services can be obtained for a fee and others at no cost. These services can detect potentially fraudulent information from credit reports, public records, and online activity that are difficult to track on your own.
Resolution
  1. Report problems immediately - Work with your bank, credit union or protection services provider to take advantage of resolution services, loss protections and methods to secure your accounts.

    A fast response can enhance the likelihood that losses are reduced, and law enforcement can pursue fraudsters so they experience consequences for their actions.

  2. Take any data breach notification seriously - If you receive a data breach notification, take it very seriously as you are at much higher risk according to the 2012 Identity Fraud Report: Social Media and Mobile Forming the New Fraud Frontier.

    If you receive an offer from your financial institution or retailer for a free monitoring service after a breach, you should take advantage of the offer or closely monitor your accounts directly.

Google Chrome to offer easy-way to construct stronger passwords

Google is in the process of developing a tool to help users generate strong passwords for the various and sundry Web sites for which they need to register and authenticate. The password-generator is meant to serve as an interim solution for users while Google and other companies continue to work on widespread deployment of the OpenID standard.

The tool that Google engineers are working on is a fairly simple one. For people who are using the Chrome browser, whenever a site presents them with a field that requires a password, Chrome will display a small key icon, letting the users know that they could allow Chrome to generate a password for them.
"Detecting when we are on a page that is meant for account sign up will be most of the technical challenge. This will likely be accomplished via heuristics (i.e. there is an account name field and two password fields). If we determine that this is a signup page, then we will add a small UI element to the password field. If the user clicks on this element, we will pop up a small dialogue box next to field asking the user if they would like Chrome to manage this password for them," the project page on Chromium Projects says.
"If they accept the prompt then we pop up a small box which is prepopulated with what we think is an acceptable random password. The reason we don't just choose a password for them is that many sites have requirements (e.g. must have one digit, must be alphanumeric, must be between 6 and 20 characters) some of which may be contradictory between sites.

So we will choose a default generator that will work on most sites, but users may need to change our password if it doesn't work. We can skip this for sites that have 'pattern' set on the password field. Long term we can hopefully also gather some aggregate information from UMA users about the form of passwords they generated so that this whole process can be skipped for the vast majority of sites."
Password management has become a major pitfall for many users in recent years as the number of sites that require authentication has exploded. As users have been required to register with more and more sites and services, including mobile apps and games, many of them have naturally tended to re-use passwords and use weak or easily guessable ones.

This has been a boon for data thieves who, after stealing a database of usernames and passwords from one retailer or Web site, find that they often can compromise any number of other accounts belonging to those victims simply by re-using the passwords.

A variety of services and products have emerged to help address the problem of password generation and management, including applications that will generate random passwords or store existing passwords in an encrypted form. But the problem has persisted.

Google's password generator, which is in the development stage, won't be able to protect users in every scenario. It's meant for use in situations where users are signing up for a new service or need to set a new password. In situations where a user is simply signing in to an existing account, it won't be of use. It also may not protect against a majority of phishing sites.
"Any website that has autocomplete turned off will not be able to be protected. Going by current phishing attacks, this means that 40-70% of phishing pages can't be protected against. Once this feature is rolled out we probably want to see if we can get around this problem. Maybe we can get users to re-authenticate to the browser before logging into such sites," the Google documentation says.

Ten little things to secure your online presence

Life online can be a bit of a minefield, especially when it comes to avoiding malicious hacker attacks.

Here’s some basic advice on the tools and tricks you can implement immediately to secure your identity and online presence.

You’ve all heard the basic advice — use a fully updated anti-malware product, apply all patches for operating system and desktop software, avoid surfing to darker parts of the Web, etc. etc.

Those are all important but there are a few additional things you can do to secure your online presence and keep hackers at bay. Here are 10 little things that can provide big value:

1. Use a Password Manager

Password managers have emerged as an important utility to manage the mess of creating strong, unique passwords for multiple online accounts. This helps you get around password-reuse (a basic weakness in the identity theft ecosystem) and because they integrate directly with Web browsers, password managers will automatically save and fill website login forms and securely organize your life online.

Some of the better ones include LastPass, KeePass, 1Password, Stenagos and Kaspersky Password Manager. Trust me, once you invest in a Password Manager, your life online will be a complete breeze and the security benefits will be immeasurable.

2. Turn on GMail two-step verification

Google’s two-step verification for GMail accounts is an invaluable tool to make sure no one is logging into your e-mail account without your knowledge. It basically works like the two-factor authentication you see at banking sites and use text-messages sent to your phone to verify that you are indeed trying to log into your GMail. It takes a about 10-minutes to set up and can be found at the top of your Google Accounts Settings page. Turn it on and set it up now.

While you’re there, you might want to check the forwarding and delegation settings in your account to make sure your email is being directed properly. It’s also important to periodically check for unusual access or activity in your account. You can see the last account activity recorded at the bottom of GMail page, including the most recent IP addresses accessing the account.

3. Switch to Google Chrome and install KB SSL Enforcer

With sandboxing, safe browsing and the silent patching (auto-updates), Google Chrome’s security features make it the best option when compared to the other main browsers. I’d also like to emphasize Google’s security team’s speed at fixing known issues, a scenario that puts it way ahead of rivals.

Once you’ve switched to Chrome, your next move is to install the KB SSL Enforcer extension, which forces encrypted browsing wherever possible. The extension automatically detects if a site supports SSL (TLS) and redirects the browser session to that encrypted session. Very, very valuable.

4. Use a VPN everywhere

If you’re in the habit of checking e-mails or Facebook status updates in coffee shops or on public WiFi networks, it’s important that you user a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your activity and keep private data out of the hands of malicious hackers.

The video above explains all you need to know about the value of VPNs and how to set it up to authenticate and encrypt your web sessions. If you use public computers, consider using a portable VPN application that can run off a USB drive.

5. Full Disk Encryption

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has made this a resolution for 2012 and I’d like to echo this call for computer users to adopt full disk encryption to protect your private data. Full disk encryption uses mathematical techniques to scramble data so it is unintelligible without the right key.

This works independently of the policies configured in the operating system software. A different operating system or computer cannot just decide to allow access, because no computer or software can make any sense of the data without access to the right key. Without encryption, forensic software can easily be used to bypass an account password and read all the files on your computer.

Here’s a useful primer on disk encryption and why it might be the most important investment you can make in your data. Windows users have access to Microsoft BitLocker while TrueCrypt provides the most cross-platform compatibility.

6. Routine Backups

If you ever went through the sudden death of a computer or the loss of a laptop while travelling, then you know the pain of losing all your data. Get into the habit of automatically saving the contents of your machine to an external hard drive or to a secure online service.

Services like Mozy, Carbonite or iDrive can be used to back up everyone — from files to music to photos — or you can simply invest in an external hard drive and routinely back up all the stuff you can’t afford to lose. For Windows users, here’s an awesome cheat sheet from Microsoft.

7. Kill Java

Oracle Sun’s Java has bypassed Adobe software as the most targeted by hackers using exploit kits. There’s a very simple workaround for this: Immediately uninstall Java from your machine. Chances are you don’t need it and you probably won’t miss it unless you’re using a very specific application. Removing Java will significantly reduce the attack surface and save you from all these annoying checked-by-default bundles that Sun tries to sneak onto your computer.

8. Upgrade to Adobe Reader X

Adobe’s PDF Reader is still a high-value target for skilled, organized hacking groups so it’s important to make sure you are running the latest and greatest version of the software. Adobe Reader and Acrobat X contains Protected Mode, a sandbox technology that serves as a major deterrent to malicious exploits.

According to Adobe security chief Brad Arkin says the company has not yet been a single piece of malware identified that is effective against a version X install. This is significant. Update immediately. If you still distrust Adobe’s software, you may consider switching to an alternative product.

9. Common sense on social networks

Facebook and Twitter have become online utilities and, as expected, the popular social networks are a happy hunting ground for cyber-criminals. I strongly recommend against using Facebook because the company has no respect or regard for user privacy but, if you can’t afford to opt out of the social narrative, it’s important to always use common sense on social networks.

Do not post anything sensitive or overly revealing because your privacy is never guaranteed. Pay special attention to the rudimentary security features and try to avoid clicking on strange video or links to news items that can lead to social engineering attacks. Again, common sense please.

10. Don’t forget the basics

None of the tips above would be meaningful if you forget the basics. For starters, enable Windows Automatic Updates to ensure operating system patches are applied in a timely manner. Use a reputable anti-malware product and make sure it’s always fully updated.

Don’t forget about security patches for third-party software products (Secunia CSI can help with this). When installing software, go slowly and look carefully at pre-checked boxes that may add unwanted crap to your machine. One last thing: Go through your control panel and uninstall software that you don’t or won’t use.

What does it really take to exploit a printer?

Printer Hack: Researchers Can Set Media’s Pants on Fire

In the past couple of weeks, there has been quite a bit of press and blogging about a security vulnerability in HP printers that was discovered by researchers in the Intrusion Detection Lab at Columbia University.

In a nutshell, the researchers found a way to replace the operating firmware on an HP printer with firmware of their own design that can do bad things, and they also found a way to do it to a printer that is on a private network behind a firewall.

MSNBC ran an “exclusive” story about it calling it a “devastating attack” to which “millions of printers” could be subjected. Its lede suggested that hackers could cause the printer to catch fire, or be used for identity theft, or be used to take control of entire networks.

In practice, this isn’t an easy vulnerability to exploit on a large scale.

Let me explain:

First, you need to target a printer that supports PJL and its largely undocumented remote firmware update (RFU) function. Many printers support PJL, but RFU is less commonly supported. Many printers don’t have any mechanism for remote updates, and many others use something other than PJL’s RFU function for remote updates.

Once you've found a printer that supports PJL and its RFU function, you'll need to make sure that it will apply a firmware update without checking its authenticity. I can’t speak for other manufacturers, but my employer’s products have been using digital signature verification for firmware updates for at least the seven plus years that I have worked for them.

Next, you need to be able to create new firmware to do your bidding. To do that, you need to know what is the manufacturer and model of your target. The researchers demonstrated exploitation of a victim’s printer that was on a private, firewalled network, but didn’t mention how they determined which make and model of printer would be used by a particular victim. They would need to know that in order to send the correct firmware image to the victim.

And then there is the matter of reverse-engineering printer firmware. It is certainly possible, but not very practical when you consider that there are thousands of different printer models to contend with.

The researchers say that “rewriting the printer’s firmware takes only about 30 seconds”, but they are referring to the time it takes for the printer to update its flash memory and not how long it takes for someone to reverse-engineer a printer to do something malevolently useful.

Next, you need to get the victim to print a document that contains the firmware update code, and of course they need to print it on the printer that you targeted. I don’t know if it is possible to embed an RFU in a printable document in such a way that isn’t obvious when the document is viewed, as most people do before they print something. Perhaps they will disclose that detail at the Chaos conference.

Now, finally, you own the victim’s printer.

Now you can DDOS SSL?

THC-SSL-DOS is a tool to verify the performance of SSL.Establishing a secure SSL connection requires 15x more processing power on the server than on the client. THC-SSL-DOS exploits this asymmetric property by overloading the server and knocking it off the Internet. This problem affects all SSL implementations today.

The vendors are aware of this problem since 2003 and the topic has been widely discussed. This attack further exploits the SSL secure Renegotiation feature Comparing flood DDoS vs. SSL-Exhaustion attack. A traditional flood DDoS attack cannot be mounted from a single DSL connection.

This is because:
  • The bandwidth of a server is far superior to the bandwidth of a DSL connection
  • A DSL connection is not an equal opponent to challenge the bandwidth of a server
  • This is turned upside down for THC-SSL-DOS
  • The processing capacity for SSL handshakes is far superior at the client side
  • A laptop on a DSL connection can challenge a server on a 30Gbit link
Traditional DDoS attacks based on flooding are sub optimal. Servers are prepared to handle large amount of traffic and clients are constantly sending requests to the server even when not under attack. The SSL-handshake is only done at the beginning of a secure session and only if security is required. Servers are not prepared to handle large amount of SSL Handshakes. The worst attack scenario is an SSL-Exhaustion attack mounted from thousands of clients (SSL-DDoS).

Tips & Tricks for whitehats
  1. The average server can do 300 handshakes per second. This would require 10-25% of your laptops CPU.
  2. Use multiple hosts (SSL-DOS) if an SSL Accelerator is used.
  3. Be smart in target acquisition: The HTTPS Port (443) is not always the best choice. Other SSL enabled ports are more unlikely to use an SSL Accelerator (like the POP3S, SMTPS, ... or the secure database port).
Counter measurements: No real solutions exists. The following steps can mitigate (but not solve) the problem:
  1. Disable SSL-Renegotiation
  2. Invest into SSL Accelerator Either of these countermeasures can be circumventing by modifying THC-SSL-DOS. A better solution is desireable. Somebody should fix this.

WordPress Hacked

Attackers Get Root Access

A hacker has gained access to WordPress.com servers and site source code was exposed including passwords/API keys for Twitter and Facebook accounts. From the official blog post: 'Automattic had a low-level (root) break-in to several of our servers, and potentially anything on those servers could have been revealed. We presume our source code was exposed and copied. While much of our code is Open Source, there are sensitive bits of our and our partner's code. Beyond that, however, it appears information disclosed was limited.'
