What's More Valuable Than Money?

Data. However, the value placed on different types of data is shifting

While cybercriminals were once clamoring for your payment data, today they are much more interested in other types of information. And of course, it's all about the money.

Stolen credit-card accounts available on the "deep Web" are selling for 22 cents per record. Netflix account information, on the other hand, averages 76 cents per account. But the real deal is Facebook. A cybercriminal with stolen Facebook  account information averages $3.02 for each one he sells. Uber accounts are even more valuable, bringing in $3.78 per account!

Change your passwords often, use strong ones and never use the same password more than once. If that's not realistic for you, use different passwords for your social and financial accounts.

What's Dropbox?

Dropbox is a free and extremely easy-to-use tool for sharing files, photos, and videos, and syncing them among your devices. You can also use Dropbox to back up files and access them from other computers and devices (including smartphones and tablets), with dedicated apps for each device you own running Android, Mac Linux, Blackberry or iOS platform.

Dropbox is especially good for backing up your files online, although the biggest barriers to this are the size of your backups. You get 2GB free with Dropbox, or you can choose 100GB, 200GB, or 500GB with a monthly fee. There are also business plans that start at 1TB for five users. You’ll just have to make sure that the files you want backed up live in the Dropbox folder.

Dropbox also has the ability to share files with others. And, if your computer melts down, you can restore all your files from the Dropbox website.

Is Dropbox "Safe" to use?

The move on hosted services like Dropbox storage site raises questions about what cloud users can and should do to keep their information and data secure and compliant.

Cloud security drew attention in 2012 with Dropbox’s admission that usernames and passwords stolen from other websites had been used to sign into a small number of its accounts.

A Dropbox employee had used the same password for all his accounts, including his work account with access to sensitive data. When that password was stolen elsewhere, the attacker discovered that it could be used against Dropbox.

This was a powerful reminder that users should rely on different passwords for each secure site and service.

Also, VentureBeat reported that the Dropbox iOS app was storing user login credentials in unencrypted text files—where they would be visible to anyone who had physical access to the phone.

What Encryption does Dropbox use?

Dropbox claims:
At Dropbox, the security of your data is our highest priority. We have a dedicated security team using the best tools and engineering practices available to build and maintain Dropbox, and you can rest assured that we’ve implemented multiple levels of security to protect and back up your files. You can also take advantage of two-step verification, a login authentication feature which you can enable to add another layer of security to your account.
When it comes to encryption methods Dropbox use, they state that:

  • Dropbox uses modern encryption methods to both transfer and store your data.
  • Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and AES-256 bit encryption.
  • Dropbox website and client software are constantly being hardened to enhance security and protect against attacks.
  • Two-step verification is available for an extra layer of security at login. You can choose to receive security codes by text message or via any Time-Based One-Time Password (TOTP) apps, such as those listed here.
  • Public files are only viewable by people who have a link to the file(s).

How to Secure your Dropbox account?

Popular cloud storage service Dropbox, had a history of security problems, ranging from compromised accounts to allowing access to every Dropbox account without requiring password.

When and if you decide to use cloud services like Dropbox, the following three basic steps can help you protect your data:


  • Apply web-based policies using URL filtering, controlling access to public cloud storage websites and preventing users from browsing to sites you’ve declared off-limits.
  • Use application controls to block or allow particular applications, either for the entire company or for specific group.
  • Automatically encrypt files before they are uploaded to the cloud from any managed endpoint. An encryption solution allows users to choose their preferred cloud storage services, because the files are always encrypted and the keys are always your own. And because encryption takes place on the client before any data is synchronised, you have full control of the safety of your data.You won’t have to worry if the security of your cloud storage provider is breached. Central keys give authorized users or groups access to files and keep these files encrypted for everyone else . Should your web key go missing for some reason—maybe the user simply forgot the password—the security officer inside the enterprise would have access to the keys in order to make sure the correct people have access to that file.
How to secure your Dropbox account?
  • Enable Two-Step Verification - With two-step verification enabled, you’ll have to enter both your password and a security code from your mobile phone whenever you sign into the Dropbox website or add a new device to your account. Even if someone else knows your Dropbox password, they won’t be able to log In without the time-sensitive code from your phone.
  • Unlink devices you don’t use and view web sessions.
  • Get email notifications - Ensure email notifications are enabled so you’ll receive emails when new devices and apps connect to your account.
  • Manage linked Applications – Third-party apps often require full access to your Dropbox account, and the app retains access even if you stop using it. If the app itself is compromised or starts behaving maliciously in the future, it will be able to do damage.
  • Don’t reuse your passwords – You should use a unique password for your Dropbox account, one that you haven’t used for any other services.
  • Encrypt your Dropbox files – To protect yourself and ensure your sensitive files remain secure, you can encrypt the files you store in your Dropbox account. To access the encrypted files, you’ll need to know the encryption password – anyone without the encryption key will only see random, jumbled nonsense data.

Four "Basic" Ways To Protect Company Data

Target Corp. and other large retailers have made the news due to data breaches, but businesses of all sizes need to make sure they have up-to-date policies and procedures to protect private data.

The breaches at Target highlight how important it is for organizations to know how secure their networks are?

Here are four measures businesses should take to ensure their data stays private.
  • One obvious way is to make sure your business' security software is up to date and working "to make sure you don't leave holes in your technology.
  • Do you have policies and procedures in place for how employees interact with the business' server and network? Such measures include making sure employees have strong passwords for their computers and other devices, keeping their machines updated with the latest anti-virus protection and providing them with general awareness on things to watch out for, such as phishing messages (scams that ask people to give out personal information or prompt a person to click on a link that will infect their computer with malware).
  • Make sure that employees have safeguards on the personal devices they use to connect to the company's network.
  • Don't forget security measures for paper records.

Cybersecurity in the age of "Surveillance"

How to assure that your network and its data are being guarded by a trusted partner?

The collection of information generated from the online activities of citizens, by both private and public interests, has become so widespread and pervasive that it has prompted several social commentators to label today’s digital-defined culture as “The Surveillance Age.”

The fact that nearly every sovereign state with the means is conducting high-tech surveillance programs, a practice that is considered by most to be integral to national security and ensuring the safety of the state and its citizens. For many observers, the most disconcerting component of the recently exposed data-collection activities of the National Security Agency was tied to multiple U.S. companies may have cooperated in the surveillance activities.

The possibility that trusted businesses could be leaving digital backdoors through which sensitive information could slip has cast a chill across both consumer and professional market sectors. This issue is not for us to speculate here; however, given the interest it has attracted, it would be valuable to share some fundamental information about mobile security, as well as some guidance to assure that your network and its data are being guarded by a trusted partner.

A key element of security is encryption technology, which is critical to protecting the confidentiality and integrity of a digital transaction between two endpoints, such as a mobile device and a corporate server located behind a firewall. Providing an integrated approach to mobile security, in which data is encrypted while at rest (stored on a digital device) or in transit, is the best protection against the loss of data or a security breach that could impact the profitability, competitiveness, or reputation of an organization. Strong encryption guards against data integrity compromises in these environments, which are typically treated by network engineers or mobile security experts as hostile and untrustworthy

It’s important to note that encryption technologies differ significantly in the degrees of protection they offer. To gain a deeper understanding of encryption requires an introduction to a few esoteric cryptography terms. One of those terms is entropy, which plays a significant role in determining the effectiveness of a modern encryption system. At a very high level, entropy is a measure of how much randomness you have. Simply put, the more entropy you have the more effective your encryption can be. Consider the differences between seeking a needle in a haystack and looking for one hidden in an acre’s worth of haystacks. The procedures are essentially the same; it’s the level of difficulty and complexity that differs substantially between the two scenarios. 

Any discussion related to digital intrusion or surveillance has to include spyware, which is a form of malware. Businesses or organizations using mobile devices that have open development platforms are especially susceptible to attempts to exploit users through spyware. It is also a favorite tool of cyber criminals, who are increasingly targeting mobile devices as access points into the confidential data of organizations for purposes that range from nuisance to nefarious. 

Disguised within a consumer application, malware can be used to gain access to personal information, for anything from marketing to identity theft to compromising corporate data. This real and growing threat requires security solutions that properly safeguard the privacy of governments, enterprise workers, and individual users.

The fact that the number and utility of mobile devices will only increase means that the boundaries of the modern organization are being stretched to include hundreds or even thousands of mobile end points possessing access to the most precious assets, such as intellectual property and other sensitive information.

Security in this environment cannot be an afterthought. It must be built in at every layer -- hardware, software, and network infrastructure -- to ensure end-to-end protection. With the stakes so high in “The Surveillance Age,” it’s imperative that you demand "confidentiality & integrity" commitment from every partner you trust with your information.

The experience is becoming so common it’s scary. You're sitting there minding your own business, when up pops an email (or worse, a letter via snail mail) from some company you may or may not be familiar with telling you that your data has been compromised by a security breach. Change your password, post haste--if you’re lucky that a password is the worst of what was compromised.

More than 50% of CEOs surveyed by the Ponemon Institute, a cybersecurity think tank, say that their company experiences cyber attacks daily or even hourly.

These attacks are becoming more and more sophisticated, and increasingly, they are successful--to date this year, there have 343 data breaches reported in the U.S., which already exceeds the number in all of 2006, according to the Wall Street Journal. A new visualization of the world’s biggest data breaches on a timeline since 2004 puts the rise of cyberattacks in stark relief.

The Biggest Threat To Enterprise Is The Thumb Drive

How did Iranian nuclear facilities was destroyed? With a thumb drive. And how did Snowden allegedly smuggle out the blueprints to the NSA? With a thumb drive.

No, it wasn't by some ultra secretive means of super-complex cyber code writing and cloud encryption by which good ol' Eddy breached America's security in arguably the most secure compound on the planet — nope — he simply walked in with a thumb drive, downloaded the NSA, and walked out.

Carl Weinschenk of IT Business Times breaks down how bad a threat flash drives can be:
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security ran a test in which staffers dropped flash drives in the parking lot of government and contractor buildings. Sixty percent of folks who picked them up simply plugged them into networked computers. That percentage jumped to 90 percent if the drive had an official logo.
The Washington Times breaks down the threat further by reminding everyone that a "number of commercially available programs can switch off the USB port of every computer on the network."

NSA officials “were laying down on their job if they didn’t disable the USB port,” an unnamed government IT the specialist told the Washington Times, referring to the small socket on the side of a computer where thumb drives are plugged in.

Organizations, whether they're public or private, have had difficulty enforcing Bring Your Own Device security measures now for a number of years. Certainly there are places in government buildings where there are NO recording devices or storage devices allowed under ANY circumstances.

Regardless, Snowden managed to get one in and get one out.

No Room For Guessing Games in Information Security

The Global Cost of Cyber Security?

The information security industry, for the large part, has been working hard to reshape how users think about security. Before this reshaping took place, security was a nuisance for enterprises, was overlooked by developers (i.e., security-as-a-fix instead of security-at-inception), and was unknown to end users.

Fortunately, the trend is changing. For example, CXOs are now less reluctant to approve those line items in the budget related to securing their enterprises and end users are becoming more aware of cyber security and its consequences. 

For me, trying to estimate the global cost associated with cybercrime is one of those ‘somethings’. The inherent complexity associated with the global space of cybercrime events prevents us from calculating a reliable cost estimate with respectable accuracy and precision.

Not so long ago, Symantec asserted that cybercrime was costing us about $110 billion per year. Around the same time, McAfee stated that cybercrime was instead costing us approximately $1 trillion per year. I wonder which one is right? It’s a conundrum, indeed.

For years, I have watched these sorts of global cost estimates travel across the wire, and yet I have found little use of the information because the data points are, with absolute certainty, all over the board.

Nowadays I simply ignore these ‘informationals’ when they cross my path—long term exposure to them has desensitized me. However, these changes would not have occurred if our industry was desensitizing our target audience with inaccurate information.

The moral of this story—we as security professionals need to focus on relaying relevant information to the rest of the world and to do so as accurately as possible. There is no room for guessing games in our industry.

Six Types Of Information Commonly Leaked

Mandiant Highlights Broad Range of Information Stolen from Victims

IT security provider Mandiant lists six categories of information that's commonly pilfered from business and government computers by hackers from a Chinese military unit it dubs APT1.

Mandiant's findings appear in a comprehensive report issued Feb. 18 that the security firm contends documents how APT1 has breached computers in enterprises that conduct business mostly in English, especially in the United States [see map below]. China denies the allegations presented in the report.  

According to Mandiant, the data stolen relate to:

  • Product development and use, including information on test results, system designs, product manuals, parts lists and simulation technologies;
  • Manufacturing procedures, such as descriptions of proprietary processes, standards and waste management processes;
  • Business plans, such as information on contract negotiation positions and product pricing, legal events, mergers, joint ventures and acquisitions;
  • Policy positions and analysis, such as white papers, and agendas and minutes from meetings involving high-ranking personnel;
  • E-mails of high-ranking employees;
  • User credentials and network architecture information.

Mandiant says it's often difficult to estimate how much data APT1 has stolen during its intrusions because the People's Liberation Army unit deletes the compressed archives after it pilfer them, leaving only trace evidence that is usually overwritten during normal business activities.

More Privacy Changes from Facebook

In November, Facebook made changes, including several improvements, to its privacy policies. At the same time, those changes allowed everyone who has a Facebook account to become searchable. Whereas users were once able to block certain people from finding them on the social network, that functionality has now been removed.

This has implications for victims of stalkers, violent ex's, or really anyone others are trying to track down. By finding a person in a search, there are ways to then get more information about them through unsecured or unblocked information posted on their Facebook friends' timelines.

The recent changes had some unintended consequences that ultimately resulted in a private photo of no-other-than Mark Zuckerberg going viral.

This is a good example of how you should expect ANYTHING you post online could be seen by the world, even if you think you have privacy settings set correctly.

You can still block certain users from seeing some of your content. However, you will be findable as a Facebook user. Be aware of this, particularly if you have certain people interested in locating you, learning of your connections, your whereabouts or your appearance.

Hackers Encrypt Medical Centre's Entire Database

Attackers demand $4,000 (AUD) to release data

An Australian medical centre is reported to be considering paying a ransom demand of $4,000 AUD after blackmailers broke into the organisation’s servers and encrypted its entire patient database.

According to ABC News, Miami Family Medical Centre on the country’s Gold Coast had called in a third-party contractor to try and restore the data from backups but it remained unclear whether this would prove sufficient to return the database to its previous state. 

"We're trying to work out how to pay the hackers or find someone to decrypt the information," said centre co-owner David Wood. The centre was continuing to receive patients but Wood admitted this was proving "very, very, very difficult" without patient records.

"What medication you're on can be retrieved from the pharmacists [and] pathology results can be gotten back from pathology," he told ABC News.
According to Wood, the attackers had accessed the database directly rather than using a remote Trojan. 

We've got all the antivirus stuff in place - there's no sign of a virus. They literally got in, hijacked the server and then ran their encryption software," he said. "It's people who know how to break in past firewalls and hack passwords to get onto the server." No data had been compromised, Wood claimed.

The attack is not the first to affect medical centres in the country. Barely three months ago, dozens of business were reportedly hit by ransom malware and hijacking, including at least one other small medical businesses.

Not coincidentally, earlier this month US backup firm NovaStor reported an suspiciously similar attack on an unnamed US medical practice around Halloween that encrypted critical data including x-rays.

The business was able to beat the blackmailers thanks to NovaStor’s backup system which is probably the only reason the world got to hear about this near-disaster. That is the obvious Achilles heel of ransom industry – cloud or offline backup.

Any business or individual mirror data to a separate system that can’t itself be hacked should be able to defend itself against ransom attacks. The wider phenomenon of data ransoming is overwhelmingly that of Trojans infecting individual PCs in order to encrypt consumers’ private data, but the latest Australian attack could be an example of a separate trend to target and attack specific types of business.

The criminals appear to favour targeting smaller businesses likely to be heavy with valuable data but lack the resources to back it up as comprehensively as might a larger organisation. The culprits for the Miami Family Medical Centre are believed to be Russian, which fits with Trend Micro report from 2012 that suggested the core of the ransom industry could be a single gang.

A Symantec report analysed the boom in such attacks during the last year, suggesting that in the consumer space as many as three percent of victims probably paid up. That statistic was making the tactic hugely profitable, the company said.

Spam, phishing and malware data is captured through a variety of sources, including the Symantec Probe Network, a system of more than 5 million decoy accounts and more. Over 8 billion email messages and more than 1.4 billion web requests are processed each day across 15 data centres.

Symantec also gathers phishing information through an extensive antifraud community of enterprises, security vendors, and over 50 million consumers.

Social Media: Addressing Risk

A Refresher on the Risks, Mitigation Strategies

The biggest social media concern for risk managers is the potential reputational impact to the organization. Reputational risk comes in two areas, one is from the company's own social media activities, which tend to be a little less regulated and controlled at the corporate level than other communications going through traditional public relations and advertising channels. 

The other area of reputational harm comes from public discussion about the organization via social media, whether it's true or not true. It could be a rumor. It could be a fact. But it can spread like wildfire. 

To mitigate the risks, an organization first and foremost needs to develop a social media policy. [The company] has to be able to control what's coming out of the company via social media for the official channels. In the policy, it's important to designate who can talk about the company and what they're talking about. 

Also, guidelines should be established to provide employees with reminders about how their statements can reflect on the company and to be cautious of their own activities using platforms like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Organizations also need to monitor social media to be aware of public attitudes towards the company and what's being said. And have a plan in place to respond if there's an incident that results in a negative issue being communicated via social media.

How to Spot a Fake LinkedIn Profile

Scams on Linkedin Exposed. How gullible job-seekers are beguiled!


LinkedIn is no stranger to fraud, having recently survived a heavily scrutinized password breach.


Unfortunately, it's largely up to you to protect yourself from falling into the snare of a scam artist posing as a legitimate professional connection. Understand that once you are linked with a fraudsters there is no telling what type of scams they will try to pull on you.


They may also victimize your other connections if you allow your linked connections to see one another (you can change your settings to prevent this). Because some LinkedIn users are in the practice of accepting all invitations, it's incredibly important to look out for scammers.


John Thomas of Bloglerati has put together an excellent collection of fake profiles on his Facebook page, along with the following red flags for spotting fake LinkedIn profiles:

  • Lower case first and last name
  • Stock photo for profile picture
  • Minimal info in profile
  • Belongs to a large number of groups
  • Generic company name
  • Rhythmic names, like Sam Smith or Joe Johnson

Why Hacktivists Attack?


Hacktivists usually attack because they want to embarrass their targets.


This week, Anonymous took credit for hacking a server at the United States Bureau of Justice Statistics, copying 1.76 GB of data and posting it online.


Why? "... to spread information, to allow the people to be heard and to know the corruption in their government. We are releasing it to end the corruption that exists, and truly make those who are being oppressed free," hackers claiming to be part of Anonymous posted on AnonNews.org.


Another example: this week's takedown of WHMCS, a UK-based online billing platform used by Web hosting providers throughout the world. The hacktivist group known as UGNazi took credit for a breach of WHMCS's database - a breach that likely exposed details on 500,000 payment cards.


The group also launched a denial of service attack on one of WHMCS's servers, which ultimately took the platform's site down for 24 hours and disrupted service to its global client base. Why? UGNazi says it targeted WHMCS because the company refused to address security vulnerabilities.


In a May 23 post on Pastebin, UGNazi hacker Cosmo says WHMCS's database was leaked because the company ignored UGNazi's warnings about security concerns linked to its Web hosting provider, HostGator.


Cosmo writes: "It is now 2 days after the attack from us and the site is back up and it still remains on HostGator after Matt knows it is insecure. ... We laugh at your security."


UGNazi hackers reportedly socially engineered customer service reps at HostGator into coughing up admin credentials to WHMCS's servers.


How could WHMCS have avoided this attack? Perhaps by publicly responding to the threats and admitting it needed to enhance security.

How to minimize the risk and impact of Identity Fraud?

Tips to minimize the risk of identity fraud

Javelin Strategy & Research recommends that consumers follow a three-step approach to minimize their risk and impact of identity fraud.

Prevention
  1. Keep personal data private - At home, at work and on your mobile devices, secure your personal and financial records in a locked storage device or behind a password. Of those consumers who knew how the crimes were committed, nine percent of all identity fraud crimes were committed by someone previously known to the victim in 2011.

    Avoid mailing checks to pay bills or to deposit funds in your banking account. Use online bill payment on a secure Internet access (not a public Wi-Fi hotspot) instead and direct deposit payroll checks.

  2. Be social, be responsible - While social networks are popular, be careful about publicly exposing personal information that is typically used for authentication (full birthdate, high school name). This applies to all social networks.

  3. Use mobile devices responsibly - Mobile devices are a treasure trove of information for fraudsters. The "always on" functionality of mobile devices provides fraudsters with new avenues for securing information. Be sure of the applications you download, the data you share over public Wi-Fi and where you leave your devices.

  4. Ask questions - Before providing any information on mobile phones, social media sites and transactions sites, question who is asking for the information? Why do they need it? How is the information being used? If volunteering information, ask yourself if you have more to gain or more to lose by sharing personal and unnecessary details.
Detection
  1. Take control - In 2011, 43 percent of fraud was first detected by the victims. By monitoring accounts online at bank and credit card websites, and setting up alerts that can be sent via e-mail and to a mobile device, consumers can more quickly detect if they are a victim of identity fraud and stop it early.

  2. Learn about methods to protect your identity - There is a wide array of services available to consumers who want extra protection and peace of mind. These include credit monitoring, fraud alerts, credit freezes and database scanning.

    Some services can be obtained for a fee and others at no cost. These services can detect potentially fraudulent information from credit reports, public records, and online activity that are difficult to track on your own.
Resolution
  1. Report problems immediately - Work with your bank, credit union or protection services provider to take advantage of resolution services, loss protections and methods to secure your accounts.

    A fast response can enhance the likelihood that losses are reduced, and law enforcement can pursue fraudsters so they experience consequences for their actions.

  2. Take any data breach notification seriously - If you receive a data breach notification, take it very seriously as you are at much higher risk according to the 2012 Identity Fraud Report: Social Media and Mobile Forming the New Fraud Frontier.

    If you receive an offer from your financial institution or retailer for a free monitoring service after a breach, you should take advantage of the offer or closely monitor your accounts directly.

Microsoft's India store hacked

Microsoft website saying "unsafe system will be baptized"

Hackers, allegedly belonging to a Chinese group called Evil Shadow Team, struck at www.microsoftstore.co.in on Sunday night, stealing login ids and passwords of people who had used the website for shopping Microsoft products.

While it is troublesome that hackers were able to breach security at a website owned by one of the biggest IT companies in the world, it is more alarming that user details - login ids and passwords - were reportedly stored in plain text file, without any encryption.

Following the hack, the members of Evil Shadow Team, posted a message on the Microsoft website saying "unsafe system will be baptized". The story was first reported by www.wpsauce.com.

Later, the website seemed to have been taken offline by Microsoft. We advise the users at Microsoft India Store to change the password as soon the website comes online. Also, if they have used the same password or login id on any other web service, they should change it immediately.

Last year, hacker groups like Lulzsec had carried out several-profile high profile break-ins, putting focus on the security measures companies put in place. Sony allegedly suffered several security breaches and hackers stole user ids and passwords of customers from its network.
In a message posted on a website called Pastebin, Lulzsec claimed the group was bringing attention to the web security. "Do you think every hacker announces everything they've hacked? We certainly haven't, and we're damn sure others are playing the silent game. Do you feel safe with your Facebook accounts, your Google Mail accounts, your Skype accounts? What makes you think a hacker isn't silently sitting inside all of these right now," the group wrote.
But the incident at Microsoft Store on Sunday hints that lessons have not been learnt. Just like Sony, which later revealed that user ids and passwords were not encrypted at the time of security breach, Microsoft too seemed to have been casual about handling the user details by storing them in a plain text file.

Indian Hackers has hacked Symantec Norton AntiVirus software!

Symantec's Norton AntiVirus source code exposed by hackers

Symantec, the makers of Norton AntiVirus, has confirmed that a hacking group has gained access to some of the security product's source code.

An Indian hacking group, calling itself the Lords of Dharmaraja, has threatened to publicly disclose the source code on the internet.

So far, there have been two claims related to Symantec's source code.

First, a document claiming to be confidential information related to Norton AntiVirus's source code was posted on Pastebin. Symantec says it has investigated the claim, and that - rather than source code - it was documentation dated from April 1999 related to an API (application programming interface) used by the product.

And secondly, the hacking group shared source code related to what appears to have been the 2006 version of Symantec's Norton AntiVirus product with journalists from Infosec Island.

Chris Paden, a Symantec spokesperson, confirmed to InfoSec Island that some of the firm's source code had been accessed:
"Symantec can confirm that a segment of its source code has been accessed. Symantec’s own network was not breached, but rather that of a third party entity."

"We are still gathering information on the details and are not in a position to provide specifics on the third party involved."

"Presently, we have no indication that the code disclosure impacts the functionality or security of Symantec's solutions. Furthermore, there are no indications that customer information has been impacted or exposed at this time."

"Symantec can confirm that a segment of its source code used in two of our older enterprise products has been accessed, one of which has been discontinued. The code involved is four and five years old. This does not affect Symantec's Norton products for our consumer customers. Symantec's own network was not breached, but rather that of a third party entity."

"We are still gathering information on the details and are not in a position to provide specifics on the third party involved. Presently, we have no indication that the code disclosure impacts the functionality or security of Symantec's solutions. Furthermore, there are no indications that customer information has been impacted or exposed at this time."

"However, Symantec is working to develop remediation process to ensure long-term protection for our customers' information. We will communicate that process once the steps have been finalized.
Given the early stages of the investigation, we have no further details to disclose at this time but will provide updates as we confirm additional facts."
It's hard not to feel sympathy for Symantec - who appear to have been caught in the crossfire between a hacking gang and the Indian authorities.

Although Symantec customers may not be at risk, it's easy to see how the software company will feel bruised by the publicity that the Lords of Dharmaraja have generated through their hack.

2011 - Year of the HACK and DATA Breaches

This year’s headlines have been made up of data breaches, hacks, APT attacks and mergers and acquisitions

Like a sleeper agent, it embeds itself in key industrial systems and waits, gathering intelligence and biding its time. It studies design documents to find weak spots for future attacks that could bring a nation to its knees.

It is the description by US security firm Symantec of the newly discovered Duqu worm in its report ‘W32.Duqu: The precursor to the next Stuxnet.

Duqu is based on the sophisticated Stuxnet worm that shut down an Iranian nuclear fuel processing plant and set back its nuclear program by years. Duqu has so far infected industrial systems in eight countries: France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ukraine, India, Iran, Sudan, and Vietnam.

While at this point Duqu is only able to gather intelligence, Symantec judges that it is “essentially the precursor to a future Stuxnet-like attack” against industrial control systems. These systems are used to control everything from nuclear power plants and the electricity grid to oil pipelines and large communication systems.

The discovery of Duqu was a major security event in 2011; not exactly because of the effect that the worm has had, but for its potential. Duqu signals a growing trend of malware developed not to steal identities and profit financially, but to disable and destroy critical infrastructure – the life blood of modern society.

News of Duqu was followed by a (now-mistaken) malware attack on a US water utility network that destroyed the industrial control system of a key water pump.

Destruction of critical infrastructure has been the elephant in the room for the information security profession. Many recognize the danger, but it is seen as too esoteric and remote to worry about. It is someone else’s (i.e., the government’s) problem.

But if major critical infrastructure collapses from a cyberattack, whether your boss’s iPad makes the company’s network less secure is not going to matter all that much.

Cyber Wasteland

From the mega breach at Sony to the annoying self-righteous breaches perpetrated by Anonymous et al., 2011 was a wasteland of data loss.

In March, RSA – the company that ensures its elite customers are water-tight – sprang a leak when it was penetrated by a spear-phishing attack that hooked one of its employees and resulted in a huge catch for cyberattackers.

In an open letter to RSA customers, executive chairman Art Coviello said that a sophisticated “advanced persistent threat” (APT) attack had extracted valuable information related to its SecurID two-factor authentication product used by remote workers to securely access their company’s network.

“While at this time we are confident that the information extracted does not enable a successful direct attack on any of our RSA SecurID customers, this information could potentially be used to reduce the effectiveness of a current two-factor authentication implementation as part of a broader attack”, Coviello said.
Coviello, it turned out, was wrong about this assumption, as numerous SecureID token customers – including US defense giant Lockheed Martin – reported attacks resulting from the RSA breach. In an effort to limit the damage, RSA agreed to replace the tokens for its key customers.

In response to the RSA breach, APT became the new catchword for cyberattacks. “It’s not our fault our networks were breached and our data stolen, it was an APT. What could we do?”, whined many companies in the ‘year of the breach’.

April was the Cruelest Month

April was indeed a cruel month for Sony, which admitted that hackers had gained access to names, addresses, email addresess, birth dates, passwords and IDs for over 100 million PlayStation Network, Qrocity, and Online Entertainment customers.

The massive size of the breach, as well as the delay in informing customers, attracted the attention of the US Congress. A House Commerce Committee panel held a hearing on the breach, but Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment America, declined to appear.

Panel chairman Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) criticized Sony for the delay in informing its customers of the data breach and the manner of notification through its blog. “I hate to pile on, but – in essence – Sony put the burden on consumers to ‘search’ for information, instead of accepting the burden of notifying them. If I have anything to do with it, that kind of half-hearted, half-baked response is not going to fly in the future.”

More Breaches!

Marketing firm Epsilon had a breach of its extensive database, which contained the names and emails of customers at such high-profile partners as BestBuy, Walgreens, Marriott, Lacoste, Marks & Spencer, JP Morgan Chase, Barclays, Citibank, US Bank, and Capital One.

While Epsilon initially downplayed the breach, its partners could not. They began issuing warnings to millions of their customers about the breach, cautioning them to be on the lookout for subsequent spam and phishing attempts as a result of the compromised email addresses. Reuters put a $100 million price tag on the incident, which falls directly on Alliance Data Systems, Epsilon’s parent company.

And for much of 2011, Anonymous and its offspring were claiming credit for what seemed like a breach a week – in the name of improving security by showing how incredibly bad many organizations’ information security really is.

Not with a Whimper, but a Bang

In the arena of mergers and acquisitions, 2011 started off with a bang, with Dell’s acquisition of SecureWorks, an Atlanta-based security-as-a-service provider with 3,000 clients worldwide, and Verizon’s $1.4 billion purchase of Terremark, a Miami-based managed IT infrastructure and cloud service provider with advanced security offerings.

Also early in the year, Sourcefire bought Immunent, a cloud-based anti-malware startup, for $21 million, and Google agreed to acquire Zynamics, a Germany-based forensic specialist, for an undisclosed consideration.

In April, storage giant EMC acquired NetWitness, a Herndon, Va.-based network monitoring specialist, and added it to RSA. While the purchase price was not disclosed, some estimates put the price tag as high as $500 million. Too bad RSA did not have network monitoring in March!

After the April showers, there was a spurt of acquisition activity in May. In that month, Symantec acquired Clearwell Systems, a provider of e-discovery, data archiving, and data backup products, for $390 million, augmenting its information management and governance portfolio.

In addition, cloud provider VMWare purchased Shavlik Technologies, a Minnesota-based patch management and cloud-security firm; Thoma Bravo bought Tripwire, a Portland, Ore.-based network security firm; and Sophos acquired Astaro, a Germany-based private network security firm.

Other noteworthy information security acquisitions in 2011 included: IBM’s purchase of Q1Labs, a Waltham, Mass.-based provider of security event and log management software; McAfee’s purchase of NitroSecurity, a Portsmouth, N.H.-based security information and event management firm; and Check Point’s acquisition of Dynasec, an Israeli-based governance, risk, and compliance firm.

“Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future.”

Despite the wisdom of those great minds, I will venture to make some predictions for 2012. First, I predict that the world will not end. If I’m wrong about that, then no need to read further.

Certainly, Stuxnet, Duqu, and their heirs will increasingly plague governments, critical infrastructure operators, and information security professionals. It’s time to take these threats as seriously as the mundane security problems of everyday life in the 21st century.

The explosion of mobile device use, particularly in the workplace, will increasingly concern information security staffs for years to come. Malicious mobile malware has become widespread, and this trend is likely to accelerate.

Enterprises will have to come to grips with social media, particularly as cybercriminals find it a fertile ground for mischief. Should employees be banned from using it at work or is it the next great efficiency tool? The answer is: Yes.

Of course, the cloud – companies will likely accelerate cloud adoption to improve the bottom line, while security professionals will struggle with the implications of giving up control over key corporate information assets.

And the boldest prediction of all: there will be more data breaches in 2012.

Norway hit by major data-theft attack

Data from Norway's oil and defense industries may have been stolen in what is feared to be one of the most extensive data espionage cases in the country's history.

Industrial secrets from companies were stolen and "sent out digitally from the country," the Norwegian National Security Authority said, though it did not name any companies or institutions that were targeted.

At least 10 different attacks, mostly aimed at the oil, gas, energy and defense industries, were discovered in the past year, but the agency said it has to assume the number is much higher because many victims have yet to realize that their computers have been hacked.

"This is the first time Norway has unveiled such an extensive and widespread espionage attack," it said.
Spokesman Kjetil Berg Veire added it is likely that more than one person is behind the attacks.

The methods varied, but in some cases individually crafted e-mails that, armed with viruses, would sweep recipients' entire hard-drives for data and steal passwords, documents and confidential documents.

The agency said in a statement that this type of data-theft was "cost-efficient" for foreign intelligence services and that "espionage over the Internet is cheap, provides good results and is low-risk." Veire would not elaborate, but said it was not clear who was behind the attacks.

The attacks often occurred when companies were negotiating large contracts, the agency said.
Important Norwegian institutions have been targeted by hackers before.

In 2010, some two weeks after Chinese dissident and democracy activist Liu Xiaobo was named that year's Nobel Peace Prize winner, Norway's Nobel Institute website came under attack, with a Trojan Horse, a particularly potent computer virus, being installed on it.

Other attacks on the institute in that same period came via email, containing virus-infected attachments.
